The Unofficial National Anthems of South Africa
By Faith Abrahams •January 21, 20260
From Vulindlela to Jerusalema, these are the unofficial national anthems of South Africa — the songs every South African knows by heart.
South Africa has one official anthem — but these are the songs that actually unite us. The ones that make people stand up at weddings, lose their voices at concerts, and suddenly forget how shy they are. If any of these start playing, resistance is pointless.
1. Brenda Fassie – “Vulindlela”
If this song comes on, the party officially starts. It doesn’t matter where you are or who you’re with — Vulindlela demands movement. A true cultural reset.
2. Johnny Clegg – “Scatterlings of Africa”
One of the most recognisable intros in SA music history. This song feels like pride, nostalgia, and unity wrapped into one chorus.
3. Mandoza – “Nkalakatha”
This isn’t just a song — it’s a command. Nkalakatha turns weddings into dance floors and funerals into celebrations of life.
4. TKZee – “Shibobo”
Football + kwaito = national treasure. The second this plays, people start chanting whether they know the lyrics or not.
5. Yvonne Chaka Chaka – “Umqombothi”
Pure joy in musical form. If you’ve never danced to this song at a family event, are you even South African?
6. Mafikizolo – “Khona”
Modern classic status unlocked. This song owns weddings, parties, and dance floors across generations.
7. Miriam Makeba – “Pata Pata”
Global hit, local legend. Pata Pata is sunshine, rhythm, and heritage rolled into one.
8. Freshlyground – “Doo Be Doo”
The song that made everyone feel optimistic at least once. Instantly recognisable. Impossible not to smile.
9. AKA – “Levels”
A newer anthem, but undeniably iconic. A reminder of confidence, success, and SA hip-hop’s rise.
10. Master KG ft Nomcebo – “Jerusalema”
The song that took South Africa to the world — and brought the world back dancing with us.
